After 4 years of releasing a dynamic logo, DC Comics has decided to redesign its brand with the help of the international design consultancy Pentagram.
The redesign honors the comic’s brand 80 years and it is inspired by the typographic style from its 70s emblems. The new logo will be released on the cover of “DC Universe Rebirth Special # 1” on May 25th, 2016.
As a superhero geek fan, I had to talk about this, but I’m going to leave behind the fact that this new logo is all about nostalgia I’m going to use my graphic design side and criticize according to functionality and possibilities.
And I know you are gonna say that I always think redesigns are a crime, but honestly, I think I can a recognize when something is right for a brand and I don’t think this is. The old logo designed by Landor was great for the digital world, it was dynamic, flexible and exciting when it interacted with the images and textures, in my opinion, it was perfect for this DC comics movie era.
This new approach is like going back to the classic comic books and I think fans are going to appreciate that, but in terms of design it doesn’t give a lot, it is just “monogram”, let’s hope the applications -that we haven’t seen yet- can give it some life.
