UPC Wayfinding – By BrandLab

Brandlab, Peruvian agency specialized in generating and revitalizing brands by using strategies, was responsible for the redesign of the UPC brand (Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas), and as part of this redesign process they were assigned to design the college signage and way finding.

This Peruvian agency not only created an ordered system of signage, it also intervened the areas where students walk, using the concept of the brand tagline: “Push yourself, innovate”; and painted the interiors in a sober and neutral way emphasizing some parts of the university with the red color.

One of the reasons why I chose this project is because in the college I studied the signage was very poor, confusing and sometimes even null, and this is a very good example of how a simple, but well implemented system can clearly inform and still look good.

First of all I wanna talk about the the general map of the campus, what I found interesting about this system is the way they named each building with a letter, I know that’s very common, but I like that this classification is transferred literally to the buildings with big signs of each letter, which helps people to find the places easier. Another thing that I like about this system is the position and location of the classrooms and meeting rooms signage, it is located so it can be seen along the halls without having to walk across it to find the classroom number or room, something no one likes to do.

And finally the part I loved about this design is the space intervention, this proofs that signage doesn’t have to be boring or so corporate, by simply covering a door with the emergency exit icon you can give life to that ordinary space. I love the way the floors are indicated in the elevator, cutting the numbers of the above and below floors is genius, but the best best best of this project is the emergency room with the big red cross! It is literally the basic icon but in huge, and looks amazing. So simple that it works perfectly.

I think one of the most underrated areas of graphic design is the signage and way finding design, maybe because you can find at any Home Depot or Walmart predesigned signs and just paste them in the wall, however as a designer I think is important to tell our customers that the signage is also part of the brand identity brand and that it can convert spaces and make the unique.

But well.. at least this is my f opinion.
